Human Right Day

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It remembers the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UN encourages nations “to create equal opportunities for all” and address the issues of inequality, exclusion, and discrimination where different program are organized worldwide. This year’s Human Rights Day focuses on the byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic on the underprivileged people, children, and women and the need to “build back better by ensuring human rights are central to recovery efforts”. Different activities are done overall by spreading awareness about the importance of human rights in the communities and worldwide solidarity in re-building the pandemic.

This year due to the pandemic, the theme for Human Right Day 2020 is: “Recover Better – Stand Up For Human Rights” is the theme for Human Rights Day this year. The aim is to engage with all the stakeholders and partners and involving the people to push for transformative action. The pandemic has pushed countless people to the edge. Inequality, poverty, and discrimination have been increasing globally. In order to “build back better”, the widening gap among people must be addressed, according to the world rights body.
• “End discrimination of any kind” – Ending structural discrimination is one of the key needs for ‘building back better’ in a post-pandemic world.
• “Address inequalities” – Countries must take steps to protect economic and cultural rights.
• “Encourage participation and solidarity” – In a post-Covid world, solidarity among people, government agencies, non-profit groups, and individuals is essential.
• “Promote sustainable development” – Leaving no one behind is at the center of recovery efforts in a post-pandemic world.
