Body shaming
Accepting Who You Are
–Sara Maharjan & Subesha Adhikari
“You are thin” and “You are fat” doesn’t matter. The way you look is absolutely perfect. You can come in any size, your physical appearance cannot explicate who you are. Others will say many things about your look and about your appearance. But until and unless you do not accept for who you are those mocked words are going to hurt you, hurt you so bad. You are king and queen to your own universe and you make your own rules and you make the rules for your welfare, not for others.
Body shaming is an act of mocking others for their body, for their physical appearance. It is one of the increasing problems of our society. Many people have been facing a problem that is affecting them in a serious way. Body shaming is often embarrassing to the one who is being mocked. The one who is shaming the victim might hurt them intentionally or not. We all are born with different body size and whatever the body size is every individual is unique in their own and have rights to live without distress but here we are setting boundaries for people really wanting to achieve everything and are not hesitating to shame their bodies. We all are aware that every newborn is cute anyway, so why is there a problem with one’s body when he/she is grown up. Body shaming can affect one’s mental health, leading them to stress, depression, self-harm, make their self-esteem low, and can also develop eating, a sleeping disorder.
Self-acceptance and self-love is a great way to fight against the people. Feeling positive and accepting of appearance can improve mental health, reduce the risk of disorders and one can live up to their best life. Self-acceptance has no forfeit. It enhances positive emotions, self-worth, autonomy, and self-esteem. Self-acceptance is the awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, there exists the realistic appraisal of your talents, capabilities, and worth. It makes a person feel satisfied with one’s own self, despite the flaws and regardless of past choices.
It is important to remind ourselves that no one is perfect. Society expects each of us to be perfect. Nevertheless, we start setting standards for ourselves. No one is flawless and under pressure, we try to make everything perfect, spick and span. Especially in the case of our own physical appearances. You need to take care of your body by eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of rest. But we have been setting standards and no one knows who or what is perfect. Needless to say, no bragging, but thinking that you are yourself are better than anyone else is not wrong. That means you are having a healthy regard for yourself.
When you love yourself, you start taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Loving yourself makes yourself aware. Ultimately, you will generate feelings of worth and accomplishment.
